SMART WORKPLACE

Smart Workplace is a Rochester, NY based company specializing in consultation for injury prevention services. Our objective is to reduce workers compensation costs, claims and lost work days due to soft tissue injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, back pain, etc. Michelle Ross is an occupational therapist. Lisa Moore is a physical therapist. Together we are a team of medical professionals specially trained in human biomechanics as it relates to musculoskeletal function, work injury and disease. We are both trained as industrial ergonomic consultants beyond our professional degrees. Combined we have over 15 years experience treating musculoskeletal injuries. We serve as consultants to the Rochester Council on Occupational Safety and Health. We also offer training through the Rochester Chamber of Commerce.

What We Offer

Our mission at Smart Workplace is to prevent industrial musculoskeletal injuries from occurring and stop the endless cycle of workers compensation/disability, which is a lose/lose scenario. As a result of our program, injuries and claims will decrease, productivity will rise, lost workdays due to soft tissue injury will decrease and the overall profitability of your business will increase. These nationwide results have been demonstrated clearly since 1983.

Our program is highly comprehensive, addressing key issues such as exposure reduction, corporate culture, and management commitment. We will empower your employees to be responsible for the care of their bodies through education. Through understanding how their bodies tolerate work and mechanical stress, employees can understand how to prevent injury. Many companies have tried to reduce or prevent injuries with a simple ergonomics program. Ergonomics alone is ineffective and unrealistic. This is widely recognized among industry professionals. Many workstations or postures cannot be changed. However, those employees can still be protected from injury. Injuries are multifaceted and ergonomics is only one piece of the puzzle. Our approach focuses on a variety of techniques to reduce an employee's exposure to hazardous work postures while recommending only realistic and usually inexpensive design changes.

Management commitment is a key component to preventing/decreasing musculoskeletal injuries. Your management attitudes and policies may be knowingly increasing injury rates, lost work time and costs in your company. This is one of the most commonly unaddressed issues and will sabotage your "ergonomics only" approach. For example, a policy rewarding employees for zero reporting of injuries. This policy forces people to work with pain and past the fatigue level of injury. Complaints are most effectively managed at this level! At this stage, change is inexpensive and very effective, requiring no lost work time. When symptoms are ignored, your employees will likely wind up with a comp case, possible surgery, and high-lost work days and become a definite expense to your organization. We provide excellent and comprehensive management training so that your management is part of the solution, not part of the problem.

We are happy to meet with you at no cost to further discuss your specific questions and needs. Contact:

Optimal Therapy Associates Services

Optimal Therapy Associates Services (OTAS) was established in 1979 to serve the therapeutic needs of the Western New York community. OTAS provides occupational therapy, physical therapy, and athletic training services. Our therapists collectively have over 100 years experience in the treatment of a wide variety of therapy fields. Ellen Paquin, OTR and David Sterns, PT, ATC have over 25 years of experience in the treatment of orthopedic and musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). They both became IMPACC certified providers in 1999 and have used the IMPACC program exclusively since then for ergonomic assessments.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) has implemented new workplace safety standards beginning in the year 2000 to identify ergonomic problems, and improve conditions where musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are reported. OTAS provides services in the areas of work-site risk analysis, employee and supervisor/management training, consultation services, and occupational and physical therapy services. The IMPACC program we utilize has proven to reduce "lost work days" by up to 70%.

We look forward to doing business with your company in the future, and welcome any inquiries you have at any time.
