RIO GRANDE HEALTH CENTER's rehabilitation programs are among the finest in the country. For a decade our multi-disciplinary team of experienced professionals has played a leading role in addressing and treating the core issues of chronic pain and functional rehabilitation. All Rio Grande Health Center's programs are inter-disciplinary, providing a full range of treatment modalities, and placing a strong emphasis on self-management, self-responsibility, and education.
The goals of the programs are to:
Chronic Pain Program is Rio Grande Health Center's best established treatment program, serving people with a wide range of chronic pain problems. This inter-disciplinary, multi-modal program has attracted people from as far away as California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Ohio, Tennessee and New York. The program consists of six to eight weeks of treatment. The treatment day is from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. There are three follow-up sessions, and groups are limited to 12 people.
Work Hardening Program treats people who have been injured within the past six months to two years. This four to eight week program was specifically developed for injured workers, and focuses on reducing their pain and returning them to work. Work Hardening is from 4 to 8 hours per day and includes follow-up sessions. Treatment groups are limited to 12 people.
Injury Prevention is the key in health care today. For ten years, we at Rio Grande Health Center have provided Injury Prevention Programs for major industries in the region and are a certified program of the Texas Workers Compensation Commission. This program focuses on analyzing the problem with a Job Site Analysis; training for supervisors/managers; employee motivation and body mechanics education. Treating the worker as an industrial athlete is the focus.
Modified Rehabilitation Program is a response to the needs of the injured workers, professionals, and retirees who are working or have limited time for rehabilitation, but cannot function without treatment. Treatment programs are modified to meet the time constraints and individual needs.
Biofeedback Program offers training for patients who suffer the physical symptoms of headaches, ulcers, hypertension, urinary incontinence, enuresis in children and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Biofeedback is a treatment technique in which individuals are trained to improve their health by using signals from their own bodies.
Functional Capacity Evaluation provides the most comprehensive evaluation in the region. After a decade of input from physicians, employers, rehabilitation consultants, and case managers, the center can answer the referrals questions. "Can John return to work?" The Functional Capacity Evaluation provides information for impairment determination using AMA guidelines. It provides objective and standardized data, for case closure and to determine if further treatment is appropriate.
All aspects of daily health and physical functioning are supervised by our staff.
Use of various types of medications, including narcotics, is frequently a way of life for a person with chronic pain. Not only does such medication rarely relieve the pain adequately, but it often produces many undesirable side effects. Planned withdrawal from all "pain" medication commences immediately after a full discussion with the patient, and is accomplished at a rate appropriate for each individual.
A gradually accelerated physical activity program is designed specifically for each patient. Recreational and pool activities are an integral part of our programs.
Focuses on preventive and restoring function for daily life activities and return to work.
A variety of counseling services including emotional, marital, physical, sexual and vocational issues are available on both a group and individual basis.
Pain invariably creates tension and anxiety, which in turn, makes pain worse. This produces more tension and anxiety, and the "pain-tension-anxiety cycle" is initiated. Our relaxation training teaches a variety of techniques for reducing pain, tension and anxiety.
Education is essential for effective self-management. Our programs provide a comprehensive course of lectures, discussions and videos, covering issues such as anatomy, body mechanics, nutrition and weight reduction, medications, rehabilitation imagery, and assertiveness training.
Our experience shows that the most significant people in a patient's life should be involved in the program if there are to be major improvements during treatment. Family issues are an important part of the program, and there are structured opportunities for family participation including spouse and individual family counseling.
